Welcome on the website of the Fifth South Asia Day!

This year’s South Asia Day at the University of Hamburg is already the 5th in the series. Having established itself as a traditional yearly event, it offers Hamburg’s public the opportunity to gain information regarding not only the perspectives of South Asia but also regarding the increasing relevance of this dynamically developing region for Germany and Europe as a whole.

The celebration of the 60th anniversary of India’s Independence and of the formation of Pakistan in 2007 provides well-timed grounds for taking a renewed look at the region.

In sequel to last year’s South Asia Day, largely featuring SAARC, the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation, which provided the theme of a panel discussion on the political and economic collaboration within this multi-layered organisation, this year’s event will be addressing the topical related-themes group “Environment and Energy”, thus tackling a problematic area closely enmeshed with the fast developing economy and industrialisation of the South Asian States.

The afternoon’s programme featuring the theme “South Asia’s languages between the poles of culture and politics” comprises discussions, lectures and other diverse presentations covering the present circumstances and cultural aspects of the languages in seven countries of South Asia.

A range of internationally acclaimed scientists, politicians, artists and journalists will be attending the Fifth South Asia Day, either as contributors or guests. The programme will commence with statements of diplomatic representatives of the countries on the topic “Environment and Energy in South Asia”. These will be followed by a panel discussion “Environmental Demands and Energy Requirements in South Asia: a Conflict”.
